Low budget bike for TET - Looking for recommendations

I'm looking for a low budget bike to go on some TET adventures this year. (Netherlands, Belgium, France and Spain)

So far I've done some off roading on a 1987 Yamaha XT250, which is heaps of fun but ...
1. the bike is too small (or I am too tall), so I need something a bit bigger. I already added bar risers which helps a lot when riding standing, but the issue is the leg room when riding seated.
2. the bike has more than enough power for my riding skills in the dirt, but it lacks power on the road. I don't think it will get me from Belgium to the south of France or Spain in an acceptable time frame. :-((

So ideally I would find a bike that :
1. can bring me to the South of France or Spain at 90 km/h without blowing up (no highways)
2. weighs less than 160 kg wet (I'm pretty sure I will have to pick it up more than a couple of times)
3. costs around 2000 euro (with some budget available to do minor repairs, buy tires, and service it)
4. has reasonable range (200 km ?)

I've been looking at the old Yamaha XT600's, but I'm open for any recommendation.

Kind regards,
Chris.

Hi Ard,

I tried sending you a PM, but it looks as if sending PM's is not working.
Can you give me some details on that KTM ? I'm not familiar with their models.

Kind regards,
Chris.

Yesterday I bought a 1986 Yamaha XT-600 (43F) that I will be building for TET riding and other offroad craziness.
She's only got 7000km on the clock, but needs a good clean up, some TLC and then she'll be good to go.
Pictures will follow later

What do you think old Kawa KLR650?. I have that bike and been around Finland gravel and off road. Sometimes quite deep water, swamp etc. etc. without problem. It is a bit heavy ofcourse (dry weihgt 159), but it is not an elephant :).

Have you thought about a Honda XR400/600 simple bullet proof engine.

I understand that he has already bought a Yamaha XT 600 .
Which in my view is a great bike for this kind of trips.

I am also looking for recommendations for a low budget bike for TET.
Currently I own a Honda XRV750 which is a little heavy when traveling alone.
Since I am a bit of a tall guy (1.91m), I guess the 250s will be a little cramped for me.
I'll probably use the bike mostly to ride across Amsterdam and take it to the TET for camping vacations.

I am looking for a reliable bike which I can work on my self without all fancy electronics.
While looking online I did see recommendations for the XR600 and the TTR600.

All tho with some more searching I came a cross the DR650SE which looks like the perfect bike for me.
After looking into it some more the bike seems the have a huge aftermarket with spares and parts. The only downside seems that they have only been sold in the EU from 1996 to 2000.
I do see them regularly on sale in Germany and they are a lot cheaper than a KTM.

Do you guys think the DR650SE would be a good choice for the TET, or should I look into a different bike which is a bit more available in the EU?
Or is it wiser to pick up a bike with some more modern tech? It's not that I am looking for a super fast bike, just something nice to cruise with.

Thanks in advance.
